FCE LTER Information Management System (IMS) Overview

FCE Data Management

FCE Data

The FCE LTER core data and metadata files from individual research studies are stored in a hierarchical flat file directory system. FCE project information and minimal research data metadata are stored in an Oracle 12c database that drives the FCE web site. This hybrid system (flat file and database) gives FCE researchers, network scientists and the general public an option to conduct comprehensive data discovery searches and download complete original data files. Core data are made available to the public within two years of data collection and are accessible on-line in accordance with the FCE Data Management Policy.

In March 2013, the FCE program discontinued data versioning in order to facilitate data access and usability. Versions of individual datasets were compiled into one current dataset and any future data updates to those files will be appended to the dataset. The accompanying 2.1 EML metadata will be updated with each new data submission. However, this procedural change reduced the FCE data archives from 525 datasets (count in March 2013) to 144 datasets (September 2014). In addition to FCE research data residing in the FCE local IMS, the same research data is submitted to the LTER Network PASTA system managed at the LTER Network Office (LNO) located on the campus of the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico. PASTA data can be accessed through the LTER Network Data Portal.

FCE publications are updated frequently and are searchable on-line by querying on any combination of date, author, keyword, and publication type. Presentations are listed on the FCE website, and in some cases users may view a FCE presentation via a document link. Limited GIS and raster data are available for download via our Everglades interactive map application and the GIS Data and Maps page.
