1. SLTER intern Chris Sanchez presented his poster entitled "Interpreting the hydrological history of an Everglades wetland through microscopic characterization of phytoliths" at the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, NV and received "Second Place" in the Plant Sciences category. In addition to a $1500 cash award, he was offered an internship with a leading phytolith researcher at the University of Nevada. Chris also received 2nd place in the State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida and a $40,000 scholarship to the Florida Institute of Technology. Chris has been working with mentors Evelyn Gaiser and Colin Suanders.

2. Second year SLTER intern Ben Giraldo presented his poster entitled "Bacterial diversity indicies, enzyme activity, and soil CO2 flux along a soil P gradient in a coastal peatland, Panama" at the 54th Annual Florida State Science and Engineering Fair. Ben received "Third Place" in the state within the Environmental Division. Ben has been working with mentor Tiffany Troxler.

4. First year SLTER intern Michael Fins earned a "superior" rating in the Zoology division at the 54th Annual South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair for his poster "The influence of predation risk on habitat use of the red eared slider (Trachemys scripa elegans)." Michael Fins has been working with mentors Mike Heithaus and Meagan Dunphy-Daly.

10. Nia Brisbane nominated as 2007 Silver Knight in Science for Felix Varela Senior High School. Winners will be announced at the Silver Knight Awards Ceremony on May 15, 2007 at the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall of the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts.

11. Magaly Dacosta advances to Florida FFA State Convention to compete in Prepared Public Speaking
