FCE's Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program began in 2005 and provides an opportunity for teachers to:

• Learn about FCE research by helping FCE scientists in the field and in the lab
• Develop hands on activities and instructional materials for the FCE Education & Outreach program and their classrooms

The FCE Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program gives 2-3 students the opportunity to work on projects with FCE researchers during the summer. Virtually all of our past REU students have presented posters of their findings at scientific meetings.

FCE's Research Experience for Secondary Students (RESSt) program began in 2003. Students work with FCE scientists 5 - 20 hours per week. Additionally, many students in the program:

• Present their work in their science classes
• Travel to elementary and middle schools to give presentations
• Present posters at our annual ASM meetings
• Compete in local, state and international science fairs

Participant Profiles

The FCE Research Education for Middle School Students (REMS) program introduces younger students to FCE through presentations given by RESSt high school students.

"Hands on the Everglades" was a cooperative program that FCE offered with Everglades National Park from 2003-2005. Teachers were provided with instructional materials on Florida Coastal Everglades ecology and sampling procedures. Students from a Hialeah Elementary School visited either a hammock in Everglades National Park or Florida International University's Preserve during the wet and dry seasons. They collected data on invertebrates, litterfall, soils, and other variables. FCE personnel were on-hand to help students collect data.
