Types of Tree Islands

Lysiloma, a favorite tree of the tree snail
There are several different types of tree islands including willow heads, cypress domes, bayheads, tropical hardwood hammocks, and buttonwood islands. The type of tree island is mostly determined by the elevation, type of soil and rock underneath the tree island, how long the tree island has been developing, and what types of disturbance has occurred. Disturbance to tree islands includes fire, drought, freezes, flooding, and invasion of exotic species.
