Tree Island Canopy and Understory

Lysiloma, a favorite tree of the tree snail
The average height of the canopy in tree islands is about the same as a one story building but some trees can be as high as a two story building. It is difficult for humans to move about in tree islands as there is a very high stem density from shrubs such as the Cocoplum in the picture above. Small animals are more protected from predators in the thick understory and the canopy provides shade and cooler temperatures.
