Broad-leafed Plants

Sagittaria lancifolia flowers

Broad-leafed plants are an important component of the freshwater slough and provide shade in this harsh environment.

Sagittaria lancifolia is a broad-leafed marsh plant found in many marshes of the United States and shown here in the Shark River Slough.

This plant provides nutrition for grazers and protection for small fish and insects in the water column.

Scientists study the how nutrients in the water column of the marsh affect growth of this plant.
