Sawgrass
Islands

Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) is the most widespread plant
across the freshwater Everglades. It grows in ‘islands’ that may not
be recognizable from the ground, either because the stands are so
large, or because the plants themselves are too tall for you to see
the surrounding landscape.
Sawgrass has long serrated leaves that can live for several years
and store nutrients. Decomposed sawgrass makes up most of the peat
soils in the freshwater marshes of the Florida Coastal Everglades.
