Sawgrass at the ecotone

Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) is a native plant of the historical Everglades hydroscape. This plant only survives in area that have low availability of nutrients in the water column and soil.

Snail kites rely on this habitat and feed on the Apple snails that live here.

Sawgrass lives in areas of the Florida Coastal Everglades that are flooded year round in wet years and survive an extended dry season. The distinctly sweet scent of sawgrass is noticeable in the warm humid breeze especially before storms occur.
