Tree Hammocks - Habitat and shelter for animals

Tree hammock canopy

Tree hammocks are an oasis of life in the Everglades. Tree hammocks are a type of tree island. Layers of vegetation can survive upon and among each other in this lower light environment.

The physical structure of tree hammocks provides both habitat and shelter (from both predators and the harsh Florida sun) for organisms such as deer, panthers, opossum, and raccoons that would not survive in the open sawgrass prairie and marsh.

During the wet season, tree hammocks are some of the only high and dry parts of the Everglades landscape.
Opie the opossum Opie the opossum is usually most active at night but will join you today to tour the tree hammock.
